Culture is a very important part of one’s identity. It influences the way we understand, experience, and perceive the world. In out research, we have found that it is statistically unlikely that a child that we adopt will have the same cultural background. For this reason, we will be reading books about different races, socioeconomic classes, religious, etc. in the hopes to understand the birth family better and to be able to feel comfortable in teaching our child about the culture s/he comes from. As we complete our readings, we will provide a brief synopsis about the book and what we have found helpful and maybe not so helpful in the hopes that we can guide others who are going through a similar process.
